Athens based

Elli Antoniou's practice is anchored in a fascination for what she calls iconography of transcendence or transformation, with the aim to capture the fluid essence of a reality in perpetual motion. At the core of Antoniou’s oeuvre is a technique she has developed combining gestural drawing with abrasive tools to subtly alter the surface of stainless steel panels and transform their reflective properties. Metal itself gains conceptual relevance: its own passage between solid and liquid states, and its traces of deep time, offering a direct analogue to the fluid, ever-shifting and multi-temporal nature of the world. Spanning drawing, both on metal and paper, and sculpture, Antoniou explores notions of material circularity and radical interconnection across scales. Her speculative narrations unfold across phantom landscapes, cosmic histories and the residual trace of bodies in motion.

Elli Antoniou has had solo exhibitions at Cob Gallery, London, UK and Saigon, Athens, Greece. Antoniou has had work curated in group exhibitions at Cob Gallery, London, UK; Cassina Projects, Milan, Italy; CAN Gallery, Athens, Greece; Carvalho Park, New York, US; Night Cafe Gallery, London, UK; Split Gallery, London, UK; Tabula Rasa Gallery, London, UK; Bertson Bhattacharjee Gallery, London, UK; Hellenic Residence, London, UK; FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, Reims, France and Mécènes du sud, Montpellier, France. Residencies include Palazzo Monti, Brescia, Italy (2023) and Roman Road Studios Programme, London, UK (2023). Antoniou has been awarded a Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies by NEON Organisation for Culture and Development, Greece and the ARTWORKS 2022-23 Fellowship by Stavros Niarchos Foundation, Greece.

Antechamber, 2026

Jamiu Agboke & Elli Antoniou | Cob Gallery, London | 6 June - 4 July

Cob is pleased to present Antechamber, a duo exhibition bringing into dialogue new works by Elli Antoniouand Jamiu Agboke. Across painting, metallic drawing, and charcoal drawing, the exhibition unfolds asa constellation of atmospheres: intimate zones of perception shaped through light, material and spatialrhythm. Moving between the sacred and the secular, the works emerge like moments of private revelation -suspended scenes illuminated with near-devotional intensity, where matter becomes radiant and architectureitself begins to dissolve.
Rather than approaching landscape as image or site, both artists engage it as a shifting field of sensationand attentiveness: something encountered gradually through rhythm, memory, luminosity and materialbehaviour. Their works operate like fragments of a larger continuum, capturing fleeting states that hoverbetween appearance and disappearance, recognition and obscurity. Horizons drift, forms remain provisionaland compositions seem held within an ongoing process of becoming. Nothing settles entirely. Instead, viewers are drawn into spaces that feel simultaneously vast and intimate, where perception itself becomesunstable and heightened.
Central to both practices is an act of listening. Surfaces do not simply receive images but guide the rhythmof their own formation. Copper, aluminium, charcoal, wood veneer and reflective metallic planes each carrytheir own internal logic, resistance and velocity. Rather than imposing fixed structures onto these materials,Antoniou and Agboke work responsively, allowing atmospheres to emerge through repetition, submissionand sustained attention. Meaning gathers slowly and relationally, as though the image is not constructed butrevealed - something accessed intuitively before words, formulas or reason.
A spiritual undercurrent moves throughout the exhibition, though never through direct symbolism ornarrative. Instead, the works approach perception itself as a devotional condition: embodied, instinctive andquietly transformative. Light functions almost sculpturally, isolating individual works like beacons or shrineswithin the gallery’s dimmed architecture. Encounters unfold through glimmers, reflections and partialilluminations that recall the heightened theatricality of Baroque sculpture or the concentrated beams of lightfound deep within caves and sacred sites. Time appears suspended within these environments. The ordinaryphysical coordinates of the gallery begin to dissolve, replaced by a sensation of weightlessness, equilibriumand subtle disorientation - as though viewers have entered a liminal state between atmospheres.
This spatial sensibility unfolds across two architecturally separated floors of the gallery. Rather thanfunctioning as discrete sections, the spaces operate as two coexistent atmospheric states held in gravitationalrelation to one another. The upper floor, populated by Agboke’s works, explores energies that exist above thesurface: luminosity, weather, tidal movement and the unstable conditions of orientation. Below, Antoniou’sworks move beneath the membrane, tracing subterranean and bodily forces that permeate material spacefrom within. Together, the two atmospheres exist in dynamic equilibrium, continuously affecting andrecalibrating one another across the architecture of the exhibition.
For Antoniou, landscape exists as an ecosystem in perpetual metamorphosis, inseparable from bodily andcosmic experience. Metallic surfaces, charcoal fields and fragmented mountain forms become dispersedsensory events stretched across duration. Influenced by the fluid spatial sensibility of Shan Shui paintingtraditions, her recurring mountain motifs function less as destinations than as unstable temporal markers- distances that shift continuously between intimacy and enormity, memory and mirage. Vertical gesturesrecur throughout the works like translucent veils, simultaneously obscuring and revealing while invokinggravity as an invisible force shaping all experience.
Her continued exploration of the intercom works extend this language of thresholds further, transformingfamiliar architectural interfaces into speculative portals between realities. References to lifts, devotionalshrines and Athenian apartment infrastructures collapse distinctions between transcendence and the everyday, dream states and material presence. Throughout her practice, metal is treated not as fixed industrial matterbut as something capable of becoming immaterial - reflective surfaces dissolving solidity into atmosphere, light and perceptual flux.

Tensile Moments of Dispersion

Artissima 2025 | Monologue/Dialogue 31 October - 2 November

Cob Gallery presents a solo installation by Greek artist Elli Antoniou that evokes a speculative cosmological environment, reflecting on our planetary condition amid global crises. Drawing inspiration from science fiction, philosophy, and astrophysics, Antoniou repositions Earth not as a fixed point of origin, but as a shared vessel - ever-drifting spacecraft journeying through the vast, unknown cosmos. Building on Buckminster Fuller’s “Spaceship Earth,” the artist invites us to reconsider our reality from a cosmic perspective, imagining Earth as a fragile, self-sustaining ecosystem in constant motion and transformation.
Antoniou’s work delves into the multifaceted concept of ‘the virtual’ and the boundaries of sensory experience. Employing a hybrid technique of gestural drawing and abrasive tools, she subtly alters the surface of steel panels, transforming their reflective properties. The resulting metallic drawings and sculptures, animated by natural and directional lighting, evoke fluid cosmoi in perpetual motion. By drawing with power tools, Antoniou’s process becomes both physically demanding and evocative, blending violence with precision, tactility with illusion.
The artist explores the invisible yet omnipresent forces that govern the cosmos—gravitational pulls, magnetic fields, cosmic explosions, and the swirling arcs of celestial bodies. Informed by research into curvilinear movement in outer space, her compositions capture speculative moments of energetic transformation: light-altering explosions, thresholds crossed. Antoniou’s metallic drawings blur the lines between sculpture, drawing, and installation. The artist’s process not only evokes the energetic forces she seeks to represent—but also serves as a meditation on the act of creation itself, exploring how invisible energies can be rendered tactile and visible.
Antoniou’s project concept embodies her fascination with the Milky Way-Andromeda collision, known as the Milkomeda merger, predicted to occur in 4-5 billion years. Science fiction also plays a crucial role in the project—not for escape, but as a speculative tool to reimagine the future. Antoniou imagines Earth as a spacecraft adrift in the unknown, asking what it means to be unmoored from our familiar stars. In this speculative reality, based on real astronomical projections, the Milkomeda collision may one day eject our solar system from the galaxy entirely. The Sun would continue to shine, and the planets would orbit as usual, but the night sky we know would be lost. This possibility—both terrifying and wondrous—becomes a metaphor for our current state of planetary precariousness, where humanitarian collapse and technological advancement are not opposing forces, but simultaneous conditions.
The installation responds to this speculative moment of cosmic transformation: a slow, luminous collision in which galaxies pass through one another, altering gravitational fields, trajectories, and the fabric of space itself. At the heart of the presentation is a monumental sculpture suspended from the ceiling like a mobile. Formed from concentric layers of carved sheet metal, this dynamic Helix structure resembles a coiled galaxy. Suspended by threaded rods bolted together with common hardware fittings that are intentionally left exposed, the installation manages to maintain a sensation of weightlessness in-spite of the use of these common construction-type materials and fixings that are conventionally observed as dense. The positioning of the panels create a sort of mirage as the metal planes dissolve as they come into eye level, establishing this essence of levitation and metamorphosis, like the individual pieces have a magnetic or gravitational force to one another. The sheet metal layers are embedded with pearls to represent the nuclei of these two imagined galaxies - holding the central forces that attract one to another. This, encompassing the notion of the black hole at the centre of each galaxy, and in tandem with the grinded surfaces, envisages the impressions these forces would imprint on the environment they leave behind - rendering the invisible forces visible to immerse an audience into this prophetic atmosphere. Capturing the debris, shapes and matter that celestial bodies are comprised of - allowed by the artist to be frozen in a space we inhabit to be examined and felt in the flesh.
Surrounding this central structure are miniature works on steel panels, forming a refracted horizon line that encircles the booth. These pieces—abstract, zoomed in viewpoints on the projected collision between the Milky Way and Andromeda—are created using Antoniou’s hybrid technique, combining gestural drawing with the physical abrasion of steel. The reflective surfaces shift with ambient light, creating the illusion of animated forms within the installation in real time. These works are not static depictions, but fluid, scaleless cosmoi—portals into speculative realities both intimate and immense. Together with the large-scale sculpture, the smaller works create a dialogue between macrocosm and microcosm - and offer different observations of a colossal cosmic event.
Antoniou’s installation invites viewers to reconsider their existence on Earth—not from the grounded certainty of the terrestrial, but from the unstable, vertiginous perspective of the cosmic. It speaks to a collective, ontological condition of becoming—where borders dissolve, directions invert, and everything is in motion. Through metal, light, and space, Antoniou opens up a speculative realm in which collapse becomes a site of creation, and drifting becomes a mode of knowing.

Veils of Impermanence

11th October - 10th November 2024Gossamer Fog, London

Tracing the outlines of an intangible interference of immaterial potentia, a deep state of liminality suspends a phantasmagoric
cipher. That which is known to exist in the elusive grey areas, the Backrooms of human understanding; nebulous entities of
impermanence, blurring the edges of perception. Light has beauty in darkness, its radiance fleeting, purely evanescent, fading to a
fugacious delicate veil of shadows, disintegrating before it can be grasped. Vapour as a vessel of perception, diffuses in turbulent
whisps, rippling and converging, intermingling with air in an ethereal dance of decay. Incorporeal performance of diffusion and
abstraction, light catching curlicue caustics as they shimmer and melt from view. A layering of dissociative states, the outlines of
objects become unstable... representation destabilising...We grasp at the barely visible, spiralling into the miasmic void, like a
moth drawn to artificial light.

HEX#16161D, your one time passcode for the brain's grey, dark light you see. Observed with closed eyes in an absence of light, you
see Eigengrau. Anti-existential realisation in the mind's eye - the image presented is not always the truth, as the psychological
effect of screen time becomes a derealization of an online aura. This reverie spawns hypnagogic states manifested by an
afterimage burnt onto retinas from a shining static. Overstimulation of the optic nerve conjures digital phosphenes - light born
without light, flickering behind closed eyes, a luminous echo with no source. Streams of data undulate as perspectival shifts alter
the surface, their flickering projections held within a temporal threshold, oscillating between potential optical states. Chromatic
ruptures unravel into birefringence; the phenomenon of double refraction, scattering polarised and iridescent trails that dissolve into the ether as each fleeting ocular trace fades to the infinite.

Ghostly matter forms and deforms, neither here nor there; a penumbral spectre whose ubiquitous presence is felt yet unknown.
An eerie fissure expanding in ephemeral space, triggering activation functions at our synaptic nodes, conjuring autonomous emotional response. An allusion to illusion of the technological spirit, the haunting of our eyes in the perception of reality.
Transcendental disorientation created by sensorial dissonance, a directionless unknown, surrounded by clouds...which way is up?
Alternate realities washing over you, enigmatic elements teasing the senses in flows of encrypted dreamlike transmission. Virtual
hallucinations of the approximate inbetween; rubbed eyes blur at the sight of computer vision, unstable diffusion obfuscates
original representation.

Media interfaces between translucent overlays displaying crystalised liquids, shiny surfaces punctured by binary light, the image
distorted by artifacted corruptions, as a darkless digital intimacy sticks to the skin like a wet mist. Phenomenological evaporation
through computational heat pressed against moist biological bodies. Witness the hallucinatory Resonance Cascade within vacuum
interminus, greyscale ambiguity permeates the ungoverned dark pool’s liquidity gradually evaporating to reveal conflicting states
of existence—between positive and negative, presence and absence....Dark energy hazing, reflected through dimensionless
impermeable systems of an obscured logic. To absorb into the negative of the image, the antimatter of the aesthetic, something which sits outside of us, on the periphery of the perceptual. That which drifts amidst an unbounded pareidolic horizon.

passages through the caustics

31.05-06.07.2024Cob Gallery, London

Curated by Antonia Stevenson

Poised for movement. A window or passage on the verge of opening, you enter and become fluid. A light flickers, there’s life within and beyond. Sucked in and spat back out into a world, familiar but not. Awoken to a glitching scene made apparent by the light that energises this reality we are now within. The control over your time and movements that you held moments before is no longer in grasp. Transfixed on the screen, time and space become redundant anchors passed this threshold. Boundless, you begin to float over the railings and through the constructed landscape. It’s surreal but familiar, mirroring domains and signposts of visions or places you’ve encountered before. All signifiers of the present have vanished and metamorphosis has begun. You can sense impressions of life are vibrating through the space, due to the confronting forms that seem to respire in an asthmatic way. The steel reflects and refracts almost returning itself back to it’s original fluid state pre manufacturing. Now that we too are scaleless, the fluidity of this cosmos spurs a perpetual motion that carries you through. Images melt into pure movement, morphing into a choreography of synthesis. The enigmatic forms provide speculative spaces that invite introspection as we fight to defend the dissolution of our present and drift further away from the space we occupied before. Details that seemed once important have evaporated under these new conditions, the gap you passed through is closing up. You look around for something familiar to latch onto and catch a hazy mirror projecting back your image, but you too have become a form, a movement, deduced to a spatter of molecules pulsating in the shadows.
The installation converses with the natural movement of the light that occupies the space. Activating the energies of the work’s surface, our encounters of its luminosity are guided by a sequence of movements we feel compelled to follow; becoming an accomplice in Antoniou’s endeavours to activate the materials fluidity. The sculptural forms regenerate new visions that protrude and then fleetingly vanish within a single step. The screens are not self illuminating yet their images regenerate under the play of light. The powers of metamorphosis are apparent as we lean and sway round a surface toying with us to dance back. Visions converge to result in dynamic compositions alluding to anime stills, Italian Baroque paintings, trompe l’oeil details in frescoes, figure skaters, divers mid-air, magnetic fields and star formation visualisations, amongst others. Sci-fi aesthetics fuse this magma of images through the lens of a reality awaiting beyond the other side - inciting transformation. Referencing ephemera such as chains, jewels and coins, we are transported to an atmosphere almost religious in setting; glistening icons behind the alters of the church or ancient roman coins at the bowl of the fountain; wishes and hopes for the future. Invigorating an atmosphere with the possibility of transcendence, vying to be transported to another realm. A passage to beyond what we know within the human existence. Engaging in the notion of black hole formations, the sequence of the exhibition appropriates an imagined narrative of being sucked in and flowing through a black hole. Source material references the visual language of A Space Odyssey, engaging further with the sensation of extreme gravity stretching you through into this constructed new universe; a nod to Deleuze’s relation to time and space.

The application of force onto the surface conjure energies that oscillate between close in grasp but also far, fast and then slow; winding through the morphing slopes and swoops. Compositions enlivened by motions where strokes appear to evolve before you; flourishing anew. From one angle a mountain emerges amongst the clouds and from another an energy glides past you into the distant landscape and around the bend. Enticed to follow and confronted by further passages - windows of opportunity into new realms. Breathing forms sync in rhythm, pulsating at a rate almost invisible to the naked eye. Drawing on some of the qualities most frequently associated with the Baroque - grandeur, sensuous richness, drama, vitality, movement, tension, emotional exuberance, and a tendency to blur distinctions between the various arts. The screens act as membranes you can peer beyond as boundaries between the near and far obscure - the edges of the real world and this imagined state dizzying you further. Rendering visible the invisible forces / energies the artist endeavours to encapsulate.

The images emerge from the process, activated and guided by the constant rotary motion of the abrasive tools used to etch out these evolving images. Transfiguring their reflective properties in an almost mirage like way. In the moment of making, intentions that pay homage to traditional Shan Shui techniques relating to spacial compositions and awareness become warped as the machine takes hold in a synthetic dance. Antoniou’s misuse and appropriation of her high power tools render them ethereal; sparking compositions that come to have a life of their own beyond her direct interventions. The demands of this bodily process leave Antoniou to become entangled; embroiling the relationship between artist, medium and art object. The marks made and motions of the tools become extensions of one another as they converse and guide one another. Revolving around this idea of a cyclical, curving movement attributed to a total centripetal force; utilised here as guidance into a state of becoming. Imbuing the sculptures with kinetic qualities, the enacted performative process transcends beyond simply the making and lives on in these ‘static’ objects. The resulting impression leaves them seemingly on the cusp of having the potential to transform once more; becoming intentionally more apparent in the choreographed movements made real by the implementation of engineered mechanisms that interact with the steel panels. Glitching in the light, we are forced into a trance that is both nauseating and disorientating. These activations delve into the possibilities of movement and introduce the element of time to reflect on the importance of the machine and technology in the modern world; advocating for the nature of vision.

Alluding to a study of perspective in painting, Antoniou appropriates the medium to slide further towards the simulation of imaginary words - aiming to invade the spheres of daily experience and make comment on social culture and the way we encounter the world. A myth-making of sorts to build this mythopoeia of a metallic world where space and time are warped, yet still remain tangible. Mirroring objects you find in the public domain; tube station benches, construction sites, lift, rails, panels, drinking fountains, here, daily life is punctuated with portals. The encounters with these glitching familiar objects situate us in this new universe the artist has imagined; utilising the reflective panels to mirror distorted impressions of reality. Visions of life ignited in the cold metropolis of the steel that’s everywhere but has the ability to be invisible, neutral and unsuspecting at the same time. Infiltrating the works, the structures that hold the metallic panels play into this familiarity of forms; questions surrounding our relation to them and how we should interact with or view them come to the forefront. Following notions of the baroque, the artwork’s installation allows a blending of forms into the architecture to blur the boundaries of where the work seems to begin and where it ends. The integration of the structural apparatus amalgamates further the real world with the imagined as we become enveloped deeper into this ambiguous state. Somewhere between functional, familiar and surreal with an apparent ability to alter the atmosphere. This metamorphic offering gives rise to the idea that cosmological powers could be at play.

Music melds with the light and the atmosphere of becoming intensifies via the auditory motions being engaged. Ruminating through the space and engulfing the environment, the loop obscures our sense of perspective further. Recordings of the machinery used to make the work as the primary source material drift in out of our focus; the whirring encouraging us to sync with the rhythms in our periphery. This collaboration with sound emphasises the spacial consciousness of the body of work & makes vivid Antoniou’s fascination with revealing possible alternate layers of reality. Pursuing the coexistence of the virtual and the real to play with the paradoxes of our perceptions and blur our distinctions between our haptics and our optics. Antoniou engages this idea through visualisations of unidentifiable forces and matter reacting in a scaleless environment. Enlightening the notion of the adaptability of the brain to completely normalise intaking information from a luminous screen with the same validity as the physical world around us. Intervening with remnants of reality the sound dictates the controlling of time, rhythm, pace; a parameter as a guiding ritual through this metaphysical space choreographed by Antoniou.

things fall apart; the centre cannot hold

30.11.2023- 26.01.2024Tabula Rasa Gallery, London

Tabula Rasa Gallery is pleased to present things fall apart; the centre cannot hold, a three-person group show curated by the London-based curatorial collective Kollektiv Collective and features works by Elli Antoniou, Ali Glover, and Richard Dean Hughes. The show is opening on 30th November at the London gallery space. In an attempt to think the unthought and give form to the formless, things fall apart; the centre cannot hold explores an aesthetic of rebuilding. As an exercise of imaging the otherwise, three artists collaboratively rethink space, unwind time, and manipulate matter. Forging a new vantage point, what was soft is now unyielding, the formerly outside turned within. Caught at a stand-still, the hegemonic narrative of the present day absorbs our tools of resistance, faces of counter movements’ heroes are trapped on mass-produced fridge magnets. Each new attempt to dismantle inadvertently modernises the morbid structures, fuelling the spinning wheel. In a struggle for change, we look closer, we slip, we digress, and everything becomes another version of itself. What if flatness was no longer flat, if the rigid revealed an underlying vividness, and what we thought functional devoid of use? To imagine a resistance that defies existing structures means to lean into discomfort and to betray the status quo’s promise of harmony. Seeking potential in slippage and dissonance, this exhibition imagines a mode of perception turning to non-quantifiable ways of understanding – sensory, emotive, fictional, or otherwise. In a turn to opacity and ambivalence as sources of knowledge, things fall apart; the centre cannot hold dilutes the familiar and reverses the definite, searching for liberation in the absence of anticipation. The gallery becomes trapped in the vacuum of its own space, where the facades have collapsed and in the ruins of certainty, secrets are revealed in whispers. Alongside each other, the works of Elli Antoniou, Ali Glover and Richard Hughes defy expectations, demanding questions be answered otherwise. Inverting the gallery walls, Glover’s newly commissioned work skin it (2023) changes the emotive composition of the space and interrupts the logical foundations of its architecture. The exhibition space is submerged in a state of flux, caught between aesthetic and functional, finished, and unfinished, constructing and dismantling. Within this non-space, Richard Hughes’ sculptures are reminiscent of a domestic setting, but in the comfort lingers the uncanny. The promise of functionality underlying Cold Corners (2021) and Collapse (2022) prompts cycles of recognition and evaluation, only to conclude that none of the visual elements are what they pretend to be. Essentials of the every-day betray us and what remains is a mere memory of function, now bordering absurdity and lacking uninterrupted sleep. Elli Antoniou’s works escape the rigidity of empiricism altogether. With change as the only constant, rotor, reversing forwardand p.p. [portable portal or for promise](all 2023) are at once liquid and static, durable but impossible to preserve. The works conjure depth in total flatness, with the cold of the metal trapped in the whirlwind of shapes and patterns. Leaving singularity behind, Antoniou’s works breathe in the light, two eyes all-seeing.surely some revelation is at hand

*pinch* to zoom

17.09- 1.10.023

Generation and Display, London * pinch * to zoom presents an ongoing collaboration between Beatrice Vorster and Elli Antoniou, who have been long-time friends and studio companions. The nature of their working process makes it virtually impossible for them to be in the studio simultaneously: B’s
sound-based practise requires attentive listening, whilst E’s process is supported by a loud
compressor. So, B would work in the mornings, and E would work at night. Both of their works are infused with each other’s delayed presence; a series of imagined love letters between friends and collaborators. Their collaborative process involves gentle mark
making, with their imagery resurfacing in each other’s pieces through digital extrusion and

glitchy repetitions.
The works embrace decay, the slow erosion of material flux. Both are concerned with

transformation of matter: presenting the parallel of adolescent metamorphosis with the shifting status of metal. The central modular system, triple axel (2023), draws together these
fictions and presents a site. The gallery space is reimagined as a public square - the site of encounters, of spending time, of loitering, of making your mark and reading traces of others. It is where teenagers spend
time outside of domestic or school spaces. Where metals rust and glass scratches. These

sediments of public spaces presented as layers washing over each other revealing varying stages of decay and accumulation as they fall in and out of synch.
