Athens based
Elli Antoniou’s metallic drawings operate as a threshold; they engage with the ephemeral glisten of the present which is both immediate and expansive. A metamorphic trick of light gestures towards a reality beyond the conscious sensory experience as the work is animated through reflected surroundings. Antoniou’s technique combines delicate gestural drawings with abrasive tools to subtly alter the surface of stainless steel panels; rendering visible through movement an emergent, illusory image. Claiming co-authorship with her power tools, she engages with them in a physically demanding, high speed choreography of synthesis. Referencing iconographies of transcendence and transformation, her drawings propose scaleless, fluid cosmoi in perpetual motion, where movement visualises imperceptible forces. She imagines a metaphysical virtuality which extends beyond the screen.
Elli Antoniou has had solo exhibitions at Cob Gallery, London, UK and Saigon, Athens, Greece. Antoniou has had work curated in group exhibitions at Cob Gallery, London, UK; Cassina Projects, Milan, Italy; CAN Gallery, Athens, Greece; Carvalho Park, New York, US; Night Cafe Gallery, London, UK; Split Gallery, London, UK; Tabula Rasa Gallery, London, UK; Bertson Bhattacharjee Gallery, London, UK; Hellenic Residence, London, UK; FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, Reims, France and Mécènes du sud, Montpellier, France.
